United Methodist Elder Care is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael J’Zen as the new Chaplain/Spiritual Care Coordinator. Michael has formerly served as a Hospice Chaplain and Grief Counselor with Hospice of Nursing Placement visiting and providing spiritual support to patients and their families and administering a grief counseling program that he developed. He also had experience serving as Senior Pastor at the Christian Community Bible Church in Warren. Michael already knew many of the residents at Winslow Gardens and Linn Health Care Center since he has been the part-time barber and hair dresser there for 18 years. The residents are thrilled with his appointment. Hes a shining face around here, said Joan Leland, a resident of Winslow Gardens. Already Michael has performed a memorial service, a bible study, a worship service, a coffee hour and had multiple one-on-one visits with residents and staff. Michael earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Communications and then a Masters of Arts degree in Agency Counseling from Rhode Island College. He continued on to Preachers College at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. A native Rhode Islander, Michael lives in Pawtucket with his wife, Wendy, and his daughter. United Methodist Elder Care is proud to announce the appointment of Sandra Cullen by Governor Lincoln D. Chafee to serve on the Rhode Island Housing Resources Commission. Sandra will be serving as Senior Housing Advocate lending her 18+ years of knowledge gained from her experience as Administrator at Winslow Gardens assisting seniors with affordable housing. The Rhode Island Housing Resources Commission has 27 members representing the full spectrum of Rhode Island populations who come together to form policies, standards and programs regarding housing issues. The mission of the Housing Resources Commission is to ensure that all Rhode Islanders have access to safe and affordable housing. Sandra has also been involved with Leading Age for the past ten years and has served as Leading Ages Vice President for the past year and half. Leading Age is a charitable organization focused on education, advocacy, and applied research with a nonprofit and corporation membership base who work to improve life for seniors. East Providence, RI Two individuals were recognized for their exceptional service to United Methodist Elder Care at the organization’s Annual Meeting on the evening of June 24th, 2014. Joyce Buxton of Swansea, Massachusetts was honored with the inaugural Community Service Award for her ten plus years of service to the residents of Winslow Gardens and Linn Health Care Center as choir director. Joyce holds bi-weekly choir rehearsals with the residents plus gives semi-annual performances for the other residents and the public. Joyce also serves as a member of the Caring Clown Ministry, dressing up as Trixie the Clown and cheering Linn Health Care Center residents in need of smiles. Joyce had a career as an elementary school music teacher in Swansea, Massachusetts for many years and spent four years teaching music at St. Philomena’s in Portsmouth, Rhode Island before retiring. Rob Bower, of Hope, Rhode Island, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award, given for the completion of two nine year terms of active service on the Board of Directors. During 19 years of service, with a required year off between terms, Rob served as Treasurer, Vice President and finally President of the Board. He led United Methodist Elder Care through some difficult times and strengthened the organization under his wise and caring tutelage. In remarks at the Annual Meeting, Rob thanked the residents, the staff, and the Board for working together to weather the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Resident doctors from the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University celebrated the completion of their six week study at UMEC with their assigned patients. Each UMEC resident who volunteered to participate in the study received a complete neck, neurological and musculo-skeletal exam. Twelve residents traveled to Lancaster, Pennsylvania May 7th through the 9th 2014 to tour Amish Country and enjoy local theater, dining and shopping. They attended three musical shows including “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, “Moses” at the Sight and Sound Theatre, and a medley of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs performed by the talented singers at the American Music Theater. Residents dined at the largest buffet they ever saw at the Shady Maple Smorgasbord and afterwards enjoyed shopping at the Shady Maple Gift Shop. They climbed aboard the Hershey Trolley and toured the town where six million pounds of chocolate are produced a day, and learned about the fascinating history of Hershey and its founder, Milton Hershey.
