From The Chaplain's Office

What Is It Like To Be An Elder Care Chaplain?

In Celebration Of A Life Well Lived
Memorial Service is a time to celebrate the steadfast love of God as our friend and neighbor passes from this life to the next. We share our memories and express our loss with candor. We say our good-byes. We all count on John to bolster our faith.

Tea For The Soul ... An Epiphany Experience
Throughout the year, John brings our community together for Tea, Talk, and Shared Worship. The Tea For The Soul tradition started during the week of Epiphany with the theme of coming into the light and re-discovering the essential presence of the Christ in ones life. Subsequent teas explore the stories of men and women who were (or, still are) strong spiritual leaders. Food for the body and music for the soul are part of the experience.

Assisted Living In-service on Death And Dying
Elder Care staff require special training and need sensitive support as they ease residents through their last days. One manager speaks:

"With a Chaplain working in-house, I have the opportunity to offer staff a spiritual perspective on "Death and Dying" as well as train them in the psycho-social aspect. Assisted living staff are now better prepared to talk with residents about their frailty -- they are more at ease with residents comments on mortality and eternity."

Keeping Watch
With Hospice Patients & Staff

End-of-life-care is supported here with a strong spiritual foundation. Our hospice patients, their families and caregivers draw comfort and strength from regular visits with John, someone they already know and feel comfortable with.

Who Am I In Relation To My God?
Weekly, a group of residents meets to visit this question -- "Who am I in relation to my God?" In community, the Spiritual Life Group shares fellowship. Members enjoy the vitality of a fervent prayer life. Personal and family stories of faith are offered as inspiration and sources of spiritual wisdom. In the Worship Committee, plans are made for upcoming themes and experiences of worship.

I hope you have a more vivid picture of a Chaplains role here at United Methodist Elder Care -- its always challenging and rewarding; but then again, John is in charge of bringing HOPE and PEACE to one and all -- Could there be a better job!!!
